Surrounded by the Whisper of Rustling Leaves
Traveling through Europe is easy - you can cross into several countries "in no time", unlike, for example, in the Americas, where everything is so spread out. But even though they're close neighbors, every European country has its own unique character. Luckily, I've had the chance to step across a few of these borders, but one of them provided truly unforgettable experiences - I've been especially spellbound by moments in Hungary.
It's interesting that many people only know Budapest, without ever seeing the rest of Hungary. While it's an amazing city, I’ve always preferred the natural side of the country. Hungary is so much more than its capital - it's full of diverse natural treasures. For me, the most enchanting feeling in this land is wandering through autumn forests, where the rustling leaves whisper under my feet. It's even more moving when I pass by a creek and the sound of the stream blends into that whisper, joining the gentle sigh of the wind in the treetops.
While this kind of magic isn't unique only to Hungary, it feels the most iconic to me there. I've never felt more "lost" - in the best possible way - under a forest canopy than in these dense Hungarian woods. These are sanctuaries where solitude finds you easily, offering a rare chance to deeply immerse yourself in the moment. The experience is elevated if I stand perfectly still, listening to the creek and the sigh of the canopy - until suddenly, the rustling leaves whisper with the movement of an animal, like a deer. Honestly, it's a rare and special occurrence, but I've already been lucky enough to witness it.
So, let's begin the journey!
Here is the first glimpse of this country through my lens. This is a classic autumn scene from a Hungarian forest. I can still hear the whisper of the leaves and the flow of the creek, while almost feeling the light breeze if I stare at this photo.

Now, this isn't just any typical scene; it's a very special one from Hungary. That day, I truly felt like nature was welcoming me.

Maybe a frog isn't your typical star of the show, but some moments are just too good to miss. This edible frog was basking in the sun, simply resting on a water lily leaf.

Have you ever come across a fire salamander? They have a fascinating defense mechanism - their skin produces a toxin to keep predators away. According to an old legend, people used to believe these creatures could put out fires if tossed into the flames, which is where their English name comes from. In Hungary, it is called the spotted salamander.

There's nothing like a lunch break during a day hike in the Vértes Mountains, with this stunning blue lake spreading out before you.

I ran into this pony during one of my hikes. Such a cute face and what a hairstyle, right?

There's a spectacular cave in the city of Tatabánya. Definitely not your average cave, is it?

"The road always leads west" [15] ...but sometimes it takes you straight into the breathtaking colors of a Hungarian fall.

Okay, I'm also amazed by Budapest. There's something special about the capital's lights on a winter evening - especially here, with Liberty Bridge shining bright.

Found this violet carpenter bee in the heart of Budapest. These bees get their name from their incredible ability to carve tunnels into old, decaying wood - but don't worry, they never harm living trees. Unlike honeybees, they're lone wanderers - no colonies, no queens, just a quiet life in their wooden nurseries. It's amazing to think of them tucked away in there, staying cozy all winter long.

Capturing the panorama: the Buda quay and Gellért Hill, with the Liberty Statue watching over it all.

So, is Hungary on your travel list yet? There's so much more to discover - this was just a small piece of the magic.
