Lost in the Charm of a Step Back in Time

Among many European locations, Venice holds a really special place in my heart. In fact, I love all of Italy, but this city, built on millions of wooden stilts, is the one that amazes me the most. I have countless moments from this exceptional destination that leave me spellbound. I adore the closeness of the water throughout the city, the narrow canals, and the unique atmosphere. Walking through the winding alleys and floating on the canals while staring at the historic buildings merging with the sea feels like leaving the modern world behind. It's like stepping into a different century, finding a pace of life that belongs to a much older world.

And well, sometimes we ourselves would like to believe that it would have been better to get stuck at a previous "station", in a fulfilling moment, where we were looking forward, thinking, it'll be amazing in the 21st century. [18] We cannot change the course of things beyond our control, but today, our 21st-century selves are up to us. Yet for now, Venice is there, and everyone can find a longed-for piece of their own past, if they wish to return somewhere else for a while - as if just playing back an old videotape of the 20th century.

If you take your time to explore the main island on foot, complement it with vaporetto (water bus) rides, visit the surrounding islands, and even go on a gondola ride to experience the city from a completely different perspective, you can truly soak up the magic of Venice. Believe it or not, Venice even has a football stadium: Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo. Forget the usual city traffic - here, you reach the gates by following the lagoon on foot or arriving by vaporetto. Whether it’s good planning or just perfect timing, catching a match there is an experience like no other. So, it's a mistake to only visit San Marco Square and the surrounding areas - as many people do - because there’s so much more to discover beyond that.

Of course, yes, there are a lot of seagulls with their by-products in some areas - especially at the mentioned square - and the canals are smellier in some parts, but I think it’s negligible - you can’t have everything perfect. And this is also a reason why you must discover the whole city. It also matters when you visit this place. I wouldn't go there in summer but I love spending time in Venice before and after peak season.

I think I’ve said enough to praise Venice; let’s let the pictures speak for themselves!

Sunsets are usually a great experience, but seeing the last rays of sun hit the tops of the buildings while standing on a bridge over the Grand Canal is a truly priceless moment.

It’s the same phenomenon, but traveling along the Grand Canal makes it an even more majestic wonder.

An evening stroll under the glow of vintage lamps also gives the city a historic vibe, making it feel like stepping back in time (even far beyond the 20th century).

And if you wander through the heart of the city along the smaller, quiet canals, you can fully soak up the island's nightly atmosphere.

In Venice, you can get a taste of the local art scene anytime. There are so many ways to do this; often, just seeing the historic buildings inside and out is enough if you're into that world. At the same time, art and creativity appear in many different forms all over the city.

To see the floating city from a whole new perspective, just drift through the canals on a gondola. These iconic boats - steered by a skilled gondolier - are available throughout the city, ready to take you around.

Beyond the canals, you'll find a hidden vineyard, a sea-lined path leading to a lighthouse, colorful houses, and just random places that invite you for a pleasant stroll. Every spot across the lagoon has its own unique charm.

There's even a park in Venice where you can stumble upon some adorable and funny turtles.

With binoculars or a good lens, you can see St. Mark's Square from a whole new angle, if you find the right spot. Plus, you'll have the perfect opportunity to enjoy some local art at the same time.

I don't know if I managed to capture everything this city has to offer, as every person has their own curiosity, but I hope these moments inspire you to experience Venice for yourself and find your own favorite spots.
